Drug and Alcohol Detox Program

Drug and Alcohol Detox Program

Anabranch Recovery’s medically supervised detox is a safe and effective way to manage the withdrawal process from drugs and alcohol. It involves undergoing detox under the care of medical professionals in safe and compassionate environment. This level of care is crucial for individuals who are at risk of experiencing severe or life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.

When drugs or alcohol are used for a long period of time, the body needs to go through the withdrawal process to eliminate these substances from the body. Not all clients who come to Anabranch will need detoxification, but those who do can expect around the clock care from our licensed medical staff, including support services and medication, as needed.

What is Detoxification?

Drug and alcohol detoxification, often shortened to “detox,” refers to the medically supervised process of removing drugs and alcohol from the body. It’s the initial stage of addiction treatment, aiming to manage withdrawal symptoms and ensure a safe and stable transition to further recovery efforts.

Understanding the Detox Process: Assessment

Upon entering the Anabranch Recovery Center, each client completes a physical exam, health history, and usage assessment with a physician. Anabranch’s medical and therapeutic teams develop a plan for the client that addresses individual risk factors for withdrawal in a caring and compassionate manner.

As the body adjusts, the withdrawal process can be both emotional and physical. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of substance and the length of use

Emotional Symptoms of Withdrawal

Anxiety: Fear of the unknown, uncertainty about the future, and worries about coping with cravings can lead to heightened anxiety. Imagine it as a constant feeling of unease or nervousness.

Depression: Sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed are common due to the chemical changes in the brain and the emotional toll of addiction. Think of it as a dark cloud hanging over your mood.

Irritability and Anger: Frustration with the withdrawal process, challenges adjusting to sobriety, and underlying emotional issues can manifest as irritability and outbursts of anger. Picture it as a short fuse that’s easily ignited.

Guilt and Shame: Reflecting on past actions and choices under the influence can lead to feelings of guilt and shame, further impacting self-esteem. Imagine carrying a heavy weight of regret.

Physical Symptoms of Withdrawal

Alcohol: Anxiety, tremors, seizures, hallucinations, delirium tremens (DTs), fever, rapid heart rate, and high blood pressure.

Opiates: Cravings, anxiety, depression, insomnia, muscle aches, chills, runny nose, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Stimulants: Fatigue, depression, irritability, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite, and sleep disturbances.

Benzodiazepines: Anxiety, insomnia, irritability, seizures, and hallucinations.

You’re not Alone

Fortunately, our commitment to your healing journey means you don’t have to go through any of this alone. When the detox process begins, individual therapists and trained nursing staff will be standing by to offer support. Pharmacological interventions may also be used if necessary.

Benefits of a Medically-Supervised Detox

Medical detoxification offers several benefits when compared to attempting detox without medical supervision. Here are some of the key advantages:

  • Safety: One of the primary benefits of medical detox is the focus on safety. Healthcare professionals closely monitor individuals undergoing detox to manage and mitigate potential complications. Some withdrawal symptoms can be severe and even life-threatening, such as seizures during alcohol withdrawal. In a medical setting, immediate medical intervention is available if needed.

  • Medication Management: Healthcare providers in a medical detox setting can administer medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. These medications can help individuals cope with discomfort, reduce cravings, and prevent or manage complications. This pharmacological support can significantly improve the detoxification process and increase the likelihood of successful withdrawal.

  • Individualized Treatment Plans: Medical detox is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Healthcare professionals tailor treatment plans based on the individual’s specific needs, substance of abuse, health condition, and other factors. This personalized approach enhances the effectiveness of detox and addresses the unique challenges each person may face during withdrawal.

  • Monitoring Vital Signs: Continuous monitoring of vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate, is a crucial aspect of medical detox. This allows healthcare providers to identify any signs of distress or complications promptly and take appropriate action.

  • Psychosocial Support: While the primary focus of medical detox is on the physical aspects of withdrawal, many programs also incorporate psychosocial support. Counseling, education about addiction, and support groups can help individuals address the psychological and emotional aspects of their substance use and provide coping mechanisms for the challenges they may face during detox.

  • Prevention of Relapse: Medical detox sets the foundation for further treatment and rehabilitation. By effectively managing withdrawal symptoms and providing a supportive environment, individuals are better positioned to transition to ongoing treatment and reduce the risk of relapse.

  • Access to Mental Health Services: In a medical detox setting, individuals with co-occurring mental health disorders can receive integrated care. Mental health professionals can assess and address psychiatric symptoms, contributing to a more comprehensive approach to treatment.

  • Smooth Transition to Ongoing Treatment: Following medical detox, individuals are often encouraged to continue their recovery journey with additional treatment, such as residential or outpatient rehabilitation programs. The structured environment of a medical detox facility can facilitate a smoother transition to these next phases of treatment.

Detox as the First Step to Recovery

Detoxification is a crucial first step in the journey towards recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. It lays the foundation for further treatment and sets the stage for lasting change.

Remember: Detox is just the beginning. It’s crucial to follow up with comprehensive treatment, therapy, and support groups to address the underlying causes of addiction and develop healthy coping mechanisms for long-term success.

Detoxification is different for everyone, but most clients can expect to spend five to seven days in detox. This is followed by residential treatment.

Anabranch’s full continuum of care will provide you with a judgment-free environment, where you will experience true understanding of where you are headed.
