Veterans in Crisis: Tactical Recovery Can Help

Understanding the Veteran Crisis

Every day, countless Veterans struggle with the invisible wounds of combat, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance addiction, depression, and other mental health issues. These brave men and women often find themselves in crisis, feeling lost and alone. However, there is hope in the form of Tactical Recovery, a program that significantly impacts the lives of Veterans in crisis.

Understanding the Veteran Crisis

Many Veterans face a complex web of challenges in the aftermath of military service. These challenges may include PTSD and depression, as well as addiction, with many Veterans turning to drugs and alcohol as a means to self-medicate and escape the symptoms of their mental health struggles. The toxic mix of mental health and substance use issues can heighten a Veteran’s sense of isolation, pushing them further away from healing and recovery.

The scarcity of adequate support systems and accessible resources is another difficulty, leaving many Veterans feeling as if they are on their own. Lack of resources can lead to many negative outcomes, including suicidal ideation and attempts. Statistics from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in 2020, reported by Mission Role Call, show that Veterans have a 57 percent higher rate of suicide than people who were not in the military. Approximately 6,205 Veterans die from suicide each year.

What is Tactical Recovery?

Tactical Recovery is an innovative program for Veterans grappling with the aftermath of military service, including post-traumatic stress disorder, substance addiction, depression, anxiety, other mental health issues, and co-occurring disorders. The program is carefully designed to care for the needs of Veterans. The Tactical Recovery program was created by Summit Behavioral Healthcare, the parent company of Anabranch Recovery Center, in partnership with the national nonprofit educational organization PsychArmor.

The Tactical Recovery program goes beyond conventional therapy by incorporating activities that challenge the body and mind, encouraging participants to engage in physical fitness, take part in problem-solving tasks, and work within teams. The essence of Tactical Recovery lies in its ability to create an environment where Veterans can channel their energies positively, learn new coping mechanisms, and feel a sense of accomplishment. The structured setting of Tactical Recovery allows for a gradual rebuilding of trust and self-esteem, which are often eroded by experiences of trauma and isolation. By emphasizing goal-oriented tasks and the power of mutual support, the program equips Veterans with the resilience and interpersonal skills essential for reintegration into civilian life.

This blend of physical activity, mental health support, and community engagement marks Tactical Recovery as a comprehensive approach to addressing the complex challenges faced by Veterans in crisis. Through this tailored program, Veterans find a platform to heal, grow, and rediscover their strengths in a supportive and understanding community.

Anabranch Recovery Center: Tactical Recovery Program

The Tactical Recovery program at Anabranch Recovery holistically addresses the mind, body, and spirit of each Veteran. Before transitioning into the residential treatment program, individuals are evaluated and go through the detoxification process if necessary. Each person receives a personalized treatment plan tailored to their individual needs. The center offers traditional evidence-based therapies, experiential therapies, 12-step work, psychiatric services, and counseling options including group, individual, and family therapy.

Education on substance use and co-occurring disorders, process groups, and meetings focus on life skills, mindfulness, and relapse prevention, while wellness activities and exercise promote overall health. Moral Reconation Therapy and motivational interviewing are part of the program, along with weekly Veteran-specific small group meetings. Upon completing their residential treatment, Anabranch staff meets with the VA or military command to plan a comprehensive discharge. For ongoing support, the Tactical Recovery Alumni App helps graduates stay connected post-discharge.
